GUIDED TOUR TO MONTE FERRU

Porto Pirastu is located on the southern side of the Capo Ferrato promontory, it is a natural port formerly used by Roman ships as demonstrated by the numerous discoveries of anchors and amphorae in its waters. It is dominated to the north-west by the porphyry massif of Monte Ferru with the beautiful Spanish tower and to the north-east by the promontory of Capo Ferrato which completely shelters it from the winds that blow from the northern slopes: Grecale, Tramontana and Maestrale. Interest: geological, botanical and archaeological
Estimated duration: 3h Route length: 3km (ring)

GUIDED TOUR OF CAPO FERRATO

The Capo Ferrato promontory is the granite and basaltic rocky extension of Monte Ferru.
It has light granitic sands to the south and dark basaltic sands to the north. An important gateway for alien fish species such as triggerfish and barracuda, Capo Ferrato is also an obligatory destination for many migratory bird routes. Interest: geomorphological, botanical and historical
Estimated duration: 3h Route length: 3km (return)

EXCURSION TO CALA SA FIGU AND PORTO DE S’ILLIXI

Cala Sa Figu is also known as the “bay of amphorae”: its uniqueness derives from the presence of ancient shards of Roman amphorae left embedded in the rocks a few meters from the shore (morphological traps) which suggest some tragic episode occurred in the past when probably some triremes at anchor were surprised by a sudden sea storm and destroyed on the rocks. Two small beaches complete a wild landscape full of rocks and reefs.
The northern exposure protects the bay from the winds of the southern slopes: Scirocco, Ostro and Libeccio. Portu S’ilixi is the next bay to Cala sa Figu.
The beach becomes darker due to the presence of ferrous minerals; the grain size of the sand is very fine and the composition makes it particularly compact. The rock formations on the sides of the beach are interesting and reveal the effusive volcanic origin of the cove. On the promontory that divides the two coves there is an evident basaltic intrusion which forms a characteristic cave at sea level. On the highest part of the cape there are the remains of a Nuragic construction.
Interest: geomorphological, botanical, archaeological Estimated duration: half day Route length: 8km (return)
