Posidonia Oceanica: Walking along the shore, especially after a sea storm, on the beach of Tiliguerta you may encounter the Posidonia Oceanicawhich, despite what some might think, it’s not seaweed, but a superior plant with a well differentiated structure, just like terrestrial plants, furnished with roots, an underground stem called root stock, leaves, flowers and fruits. The root stocks grow horizontally and vertically generating prairies that colonize the sandy seabeds up to 30,40 mt. deep.
Why is Posidonia Oceanica fundamental? Beacause…
1) it facilitates the stabilization of the seabed with its roots;
2) it reduces the intensity and strength of the sea flows with its leaves, who can reach up to a meter in height, preserving the good health of the sand shores and protecting, therefore, the cost from erosion;
3) the old leaves, carried by the flows, are very useful because they get settled by the waves on the shore building drifts several meters thick, called banquettes, who protect the shore from the erosion caused by sea storms. The fiber residual more resistant than leaves get compacted by the waves and sent back to the shore as “balls” .
The Posidonia meadow produces oxygen and organic matter through photosynthesis: 1 sqm of Posidonia produces 14lt. of oxygen per day and it represents an habitat very rich with biodiversity for the number and variety of animal and vegetable species it hosts. It is the ideal habitat – protected by the European Union by the Habitat Directive- for seahorses, noble pen shells, pipe fish and many more animals that here may find hospitality and food.
ATTENTION ! Beth, even of a boat of little coasting, protracted for some time on the meadow, it’s enough to cause irreversible damage and start the erosion process. Think that the disappearance of one only meter from the front of the prairie may cause the erosion of about 15mt. of the sand shore in front of it and compromise the existence of the beaches!

…E’ nata, finalmente!
